1What this policy covers

This Privacy Policy explains how Parlamos ("Parlamos," "we," "us") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the service. Please read it together with our Terms of Service.

2What we collect

We collect only what we need to run Parlamos:

  • Your account and profile: your name, email, password (stored in a hashed form we cannot read), and the languages, country, interests, and photo you choose to add.
  • What you create: messages, listings, reviews, and reports.
  • Paid lessons: booking details and payment status. Card details go straight to our payment provider. We never see or store your full card number.
  • Teacher verification: for teachers, a pass or fail result from our identity-verification provider, not a copy of your ID.
  • Technical information: basic device, browser, and usage information, and a session cookie that keeps you signed in.

3Why we use it

We use this information to run and improve Parlamos, connect you with partners and teachers, handle bookings and payments, verify teacher identity, keep people safe and enforce our Community rules, contact you about your account, and meet our legal obligations. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.

4What other members can see

Your profile, listings, and reviews are visible to other members. Certificates you send for a credential badge stay private and are seen only by our administrators. Only the approved credential name is shown publicly. Messages are visible only to the people in the conversation (or, in a group practice room, everyone currently in that room) and, where relevant, to administrators reviewing a report.

5Calls and group rooms

Paid lessons, free voice calls, and free group practice rooms all happen in your browser through our video provider. The provider relays the audio and video, so members never see each other's IP address or network details. We do not record calls or group rooms.

6Who we share it with

We share information only in these cases:

  • Other members, as needed for you to use the service.
  • Service providers who work for us under confidentiality terms: hosting and our database (Vercel and Supabase), payment processing (Stripe), identity verification, video calls (Daily), video course hosting (Bunny), and email delivery.
  • Authorities or others, when the law requires it or to protect the safety of our members and the service.
  • A buyer, if Parlamos is ever involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale, in which case your information may transfer as part of that deal.

7How long we keep it

We keep personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service, follow the law, and resolve disputes. Live chats are kept for 90 days. Copies tied to a safety report are kept for up to 365 days. Corrections you receive are saved to your private practice journal and kept until you delete your account. When you delete your account, we delete or anonymize your personal information within a reasonable time, except where we are required to keep certain records.

8How we protect it

We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit, hashed passwords, and limited access to sensitive data. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so we cannot promise absolute security.

9Your choices and rights

You can view and edit most of your information directly in your account settings, and you can ask for a copy of your data or to delete it. As a Canadian service, we handle personal information under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights, for example under the GDPR in Europe or the CCPA and CPRA in California, to access, correct, delete, or object to certain uses of your information. To exercise any of these, email us at privacy@parlamos.com and we will help.

10Cookies

We use one session cookie to keep you signed in. We do not use third-party advertising or tracking cookies.

11International transfers

Parlamos is based in Canada, and our members are all over the world, so your information may be processed in Canada or in other countries. Where the law requires it, we rely on approved safeguards for those transfers.

12Under-18s

Parlamos is for adults. It is not meant for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have, we will delete it.

13Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make an important change, we will post it here with a new date.
